Skype’s dominance in the VoIP market is boosting the manufacturing industry for Skype phones. There were more than 138 million Skype users worldwide in 2006. As this is expected to continue growing, makers of Skype phones are projecting positive growth for the coming years. The uptick in the mainland China and Taiwan market has been strong over the last three years, and makers expect the uptrend to continue in 2007.
The robust market and comparatively low technology threshold for the sector are inviting more makers to explore this line. Many makers from the consumer electronics segment are expected to start developing and making Skype phones in the coming months. The expansion will be reflected in other related product lines, such as headsets, microphones, cordless USB phones and Wi-Fi phones, where Skype is likewise starting to fuel growth in both demand and supply.
