One analyst has indicated that eBay could be the top new videogame console retailer for the holidays, thanks to tight demand of the PlayStation 3 and Wii.
In a note to investors, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian said that limited supplies of the Wii and PS3 will drive gamers to eBay and other online marketplaces in search of the highly desired hardware.
The practice isn’t anything new with the gaming industry (e.g. short-supply gaming hardware launches, dedicated “entrepreneurs find a way to buy (or pre-order) one or more, said “entrepreneur posts sale of device on eBay for at least twice the MSRP, desperate gamer who can’t find device at retail pays out the nose to “win the auction). It happened most recently with the launch of the Xbox 360 in November 2005, a console which is of course now readily available on retail shelves.
