PayPal Profits Higher Than eBay

EBay, the world’s largest online auctioneer, on Wednesday reported a better-than-expected profit for the third quarter after online payment services spurred revenue growth.

Profit rose 10 percent from a year earlier to $280.9 million. Analysts, on average, expected eBay to report a profit of $238.2 million.

The PayPal payment services unit of eBay grew faster than eBay’s core auction sites and helped to raise revenue 31 percent to $1.45 billion. Higher spending to improve security in auctions and improve payment and online phone services narrowed eBay’s profit margins.
